Celebrity Fight Night XIX

Posted April 1, 2013

Fight Night's music director and Black Ribbon's client, David Foster

Celebrities, athletes, and philanthropists flocked to Fight Night XIX for auctions, dinner, and a show. This event may seem like just another star-studded gathering; however, it’s a huge fundraiser for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center’s Barrow Neurological Institute, and more.

“Celebrity Fight Night’s ongoing support makes a tremendous difference for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center,” says Abraham Lieberman, MD, director of the MAPC. “Their support is the backbone of so much of what we do—from education and exercise programs to support groups, the Parkinson Registry and Ali Care. Without the yearly contribution from Celebrity Fight Night Foundation, we would be unable to offer all that we do.”

David Foster, a Black Ribbon client, was the musical director for the 14th year. Brian Benison Music was hired to do the music preparation for Foster and the event. Black Ribbon’s CEO worked on takedowns (music transcription), copying, and printing all of the music for the performances. For the event, he drove a portable “Black Ribbon” to Arizona to work as the on-site music librarian, printer, and editor.

The evening included performances by Steve Martin, Andrea Bocelli, Jennifer Lopez, Billy Crystal, Billy Ray Cyrus, American Idol finalist Haley Reinhart, X-Factor winner Tate Stevens, and more.

In the past 19 years, the foundation has raised $87 million for amazing causes. Fight Night XIX didn’t disappoint. Over $7 million was raised by the night’s end. Black Ribbon is very grateful to have been a part of such an amazing event for a life-changing foundation.

The Empire Strikes Abbey Road

Posted October 1, 2011

In preparation for Microsoft Kinect’s Star Wars, Black Ribbon teamed up with composers Gordy Haab and Kyle Newmaster to record the score at Abbey Road Studios. Black Ribbon’s CEO, Matt Franko, was the Head of Music Preparation and Music Librarian for these sessions. 200 pounds of printed music travelled with him across the pond in September of 2011.
The goal was to reflect the original Star Wars soundtracks as much as possible. Engineers transformed the studio to the original configuration in preparation for the London Symphony Orchestra. This was the same orchestra that performed the original soundtrack – including some of the same musicians. Check out the photos, videos, and links for an inside look at the session.

Anne LeBaron – Hsing | World Premiere

Next Sat., Jan. 29, Anne LeBaron’s work for solo harp, Hsing, written about a decade ago but only now getting its first full performance, will be premiered by Alison Bjorkedal at the Armory for the Arts in Pasadena, at 8 PM. The Southwest Chamber Music concert will include Tom Peter’s rendition of the ferociously difficult “Theraps”, for solo double bass, by Iannis Xenakis. Further details given below; program notes can be accessed here.

A few words from the composer [Anne LeBaron]….

“In a few hours, at 11 AM on Thurs., Jan. 20, Alison will perform excerpts from Hsing on KPFK, with John Schneider hosting Global Village Thursdays, along with a few comments from me, explaining the role of ‘activated’ harpist. (The segment will stream for the next two weeks.) You’ll hear more about why the performer will speak to the harp, asking it questions while caressing it, engaging with the sound holes, and drawing wild cards that play havoc with the flow of the piece, all while performing what is mostly standard writing for harp (with a few bowings and scrapings thrown in).  Hsing, with a framework corresponding to the five elements of feng shui, makes use of the Lo Shu (magic square) to determine exactly where the wild cards are embedded in the score, and is personalized with the back story of an encounter I had with a haunted harp. We’ve engaged Rafael Lopez-Barrantes to direct this performance. I hope to see some of you there!”
